San Diego Board of Supervisors’ School Safety Initiative
The Board of Supervisors made a surprise announcement that nine school districts would soon have Sheriff’s deputies assigned as School Resource Officers (SROs) assigned at no cost to the schools. This pilot program will be paid for by the County’s Public Safety Group, and is intended to replicate the success of SRO programs in San Diego’s schools.
Safety is a top priority for everyone in the Valley Center - Pauma Unified School District. We conducted an in-depth study of school safety in 2014, which included a needs analysis for School Resource Officers. School safety experts from the San Diego County Office of Education concluded that due to the low crime rate on our campuses, excellent school climate and relationships with local law enforcement, adding an SRO would be a very low priority for our schools. Higher priorities included in the action plan included hiring additional counselors, adding video cameras and facilities upgrades for safety. This action plan was approved by our Board and we continue to review ways to keep our students safe at school.
