Superintendent visiting with LIlac Elementary School students

Recently, Valley Center-Pauma Unified School District Superintendent Ron McCowan and VCUSD Board President Julie Stroh made a visit to Lilac Elementary School for a tour of TK and K classrooms.

The visit was intended to give the district officials the opportunity to see, first hand, the instruction taking place within the classrooms, which is based on a combination of the California Preschool Learning Foundations and Kinder Standards.

In addition to learning more about how the district’s program is benefitting the young students, it gave McCowan and Stroh an opportunity to sit and visit with Valley Center’s youngest pupils.

The visit came on the heels of VCPUSD’s recent announcement that the district has opened enrollment for students who will turn 5 years of age between Sept. 2, 2023 and June 2, 2024, for the district’s TK program.

By starting enrollment early, VCPUSDis responding to a need in the community by offering TK one year earlier than state guidelines currently dictate.

Over the next four years, TK will expand to include all 4 year olds.

The TK program acts as a bridge between preschool and kindergarten and is held in a classroom style environment with credentialed teachers leading each class.

VCPUSD schools are focused on care, connection, innovative learning, and serving the community.

Students are provided opportunities for social-emotional, language development, and communication through a play-based program. They will learn through small group instruction and intentional teaching utilizing hands-on activities.

The school day hours are the same as traditional kindergarten.

The district will continue to hold a series of informational nights to provide more information about the classes and enrollment. Upcoming events will be held:

  • 5:30-6:30 p.m. May 24 at Valley Center Primary School
  • 5-7 p.m. May 18 at Lilac Elementary School
  • 5:15-7 p.m. May 5 at Pauma School
